Encouraging Results for New Zealand Magazine Industry

16 Jun 2009

Last month the Nielsen Readership Survey revealed encouraging results for New Zealand's magazine industry. It confirmed that 92 per cent of New Zealanders read magazines, a percentage that has remained constant for years and indicates that despite recent economic challenges, New Zealand published magazines are providing much needed inspiration, entertainment and escapism for readers.

The research also revealed that 12 million grocery baskets contained a magazine in 2008, equating to one in every ten baskets - greater than the other ‘indulgence' categories such as wine, beer, chocolate and ice cream and 75 per cent of all magazines sold in New Zealand are published locally, and New Zealand titles account for 63 per cent of the sales value of all magazines sold at retail.

This is further evident with the news from the Magazine Publishers Association of New Zealand announcing that 31 magazine titles from 19 publishers have made the finalists cut in the highly anticipated MPA Magazine Awards for 2009. With 188 entries from 44 magazine titles covering Consumer, Business, Sport & Leisure, Home/Food Garden, just to name a few, the 2009 MPA Awards has attracted more publishers than ever before. There are eleven awards covering categories such as Best Magazine Website, Designer of the Year, Circulation Promotion Achievement, Best Launch or Re-Launch as well as Overall Magazine of the Year.

"It is great to see so many publishers keen to back themselves and their teams for major awards, and especially so many new MPA members entering," says Kath Hurley, Marketing & Communications Manager for MPA. "Achieving a finalist placing requires a minimum score of 75 per cent against detailed criteria; judging is a six week process, involving twenty four judges from the media industry around the country, and vigorous debate! Achieving a place makes a strong statement to staff, employers, advertisers, media peers, publishing stakeholders and readers - considered very important in this economic climate."
