Lonely Planet Magazine to Launch

21 Jul 2009

According to the chief executive of BBC Worldwide, John Smith, the company is currently in the second year of a five year plan to increase revenue from outside the UK. With Australia regarded as one of its "tier countries" it comes as no surprise that a lot of the growth activity is taking place in Australia.

Following the purchase of 100 per cent of UKTV in Australia as well as the launch of BBC Knowledge and CBeebies the BBC claims their viewing through Foxtel homes in Australia has increased 30 per cent in under one year.

As reported in B&T, the JV between BBC Worldwide and ACP Magazines has witnessed many launches of BBC publications in to the Australian market such as Top Gear Australia with a circulation of 83,530 and BBC Australian Good Food with a circulation of 71,250. Lonely Planet has opened its headquarters in Melbourne and with Lonely Planet magazine versions already in the UK and Brazilian markets the launch of Lonely Planet magazine is next on the agenda for the BBC in Australia.

Whilst there is no further information on launch dates, Marcus Arthur, BBC global head of brands has told B&T that the "JV with ACP has been phenomenally successful" and went on to say, "We also have a number of other magazines we're looking at for the Australian market. There will definitely be more activity for the coming year from our JV with ACP."
