Guide to Responsible Magazine Publishing Released

04 Aug 2009

According to a new report from the International Federation of the Periodical Press (FIPP) and the European Federation of Magazine Publishers (FAEP) the production of magazines can be sustainable.

The new edition of The FIPP/FAEP Magazines and the Environment Handbook sets out to help magazine publishers make informed decisions to be environmentally responsible within their business. The report sets out to establish what steps are needed to improve the sustainability of a magazine or a group of titles.

Chairman of the FIPP/FAEP Environment Committee, Sally Cartwright said: "Like all businesses, magazine publishing has an impact on the environment. However, in many ways we have the potential to be one of the most self-sustaining and environmentally sound industries, because our main resource, paper, comes from a renewable resource and is also recyclable."

Case studies in the report show what publishers can and are doing in the fields of corporate social responsibility, building sustainability and educating their readers.

Recommendations are made for publishers setting out to calculate their carbon footprint as well as how the general environmental impact and the climate change impact of a magazine can be reduced. It looks at the lifecycle of a magazine and identifies issues for publishers to consider as well as giving publishers a number of questions they can ask of their suppliers to help them make purchasing decisions that contribute to the reduction of the impact of their activities.
