Women's Magazine Can't Find Printer

18 Aug 2009

UK Women's magazine Filament is struggling to find a printer because of its racy content.

Filament promises "72 quarterly pages of intelligent thought and beautiful men", but after its first issue is struggling to find a printer to produce the second, as reported in

Editor Suraya Sidhu Singh described negotiations with the original printer as "a lost cause" after the company decided it did not wish to continue printing because of the nature of the content.

The quarterly magazine is an A4 full-colour 72-page magazine that had a run of 5,000 for its debut issue.

Distribution problems meant that 3,000 of these had to be pulped. These have been resolved for the second issue which will still be the same run length, but the business is still negotiating with printers to secure the work.

Singh said that the printers prepared to take on the work "still ended up considerably more expensive than our original printers".

"We're less than 10 days away from our print deadline and we're still negotiating with printers for our second issue," she continued.

"We don't plan to fill Filament front-to-back with explicit images. Filament is sometimes criticised for being too tame, but it's not our policy to be non-explicit."

On their website is described as "the thinking woman's crumpet" and has a list of what Filament does and doesn't deliver. Inclusions are intelligent and interesting articles, images of men made for the female gaze and high-quality writing and design whilst the don'ts are fashion and cosmetics, diets and celebrity gossip.
