Publishers Australia Strengthens Alliances and Executes Expansion Strategy

01 Sep 2009

Thirty publishing and media industry professionals attended the inaugural luncheon in Perth last week, with 13 magazine and newspaper publishers being represented, underlining the viability of starting a chapter of the association in Western Australia.

Publishers Australia Chairman, Geoff Hird was encouraged not only by the attendance, but also by the eagerness of many to form a WA chapter. "Senior executives of several companies approached me after the lunch saying they knew of colleagues and associates who would attend future meetings and benefit from what Publishers Australia can offer." Hird said after the event, adding "Perth is home to well over 100 high quality, targeted magazine publishers and we look forward to establishing a strong member base here in the very near future."

Leading B2B mining publisher and listed company, Aspermont, joined the association at the meeting last week and their CEO Colm O'Brien has put up his hand to promote and drive the new WA chapter.

"I am keen to get Publishers Australia moving forward in Perth and will assist in any way I can. I know several publishers who will benefit from this initiative and hopefully join the association in the short term," O'Brien said. Alan Sarkissian, the association's CEO, will initially work with O'Brien to organise another meeting towards the end of the year.

The Perth event was supported by the Circulation Audit Board who ran a workshop for members and non-members earlier in the day. Publishers Australia is continuing to develop strong alliances with related media industry groups with a view to forming a larger, unified voice for members of all those involved in niche, targeted media.

Current initiatives include the support of the group's Excellence Awards - Bell ‘09, and other joint projects, from the Audit Bureaux of Australia, the Media Federation of Australia, Printing Industries Association of Australia, the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association, the Marketing Institute of Australia and the Australian Newsagents Federation.

"Publishers Australia has come a long way in the past 12 months, and the alliances we have made over this time are a reflection of this. We are also in the middle of some very positive discussions with Australia Post in regard to ongoing sponsorship programs, strategic joint projects and potential exclusive member incentives." Hird said.

Publishers Australia will hold its AGM in Sydney on September 24. A record number of leading publishing executives have nominated to join the Board of Directors for the coming year, again underlining the fact that this is one industry peak body defying the trend and clearly moving forward.
