Vale Mike Udabage

21 Oct 2010

Former Publishers Australia board member and publisher at IDG Communications and ACP Mike Udabage was remembered by former colleagues and friends at a memorial service this month.

He had recently returned from his homeland in Sri Lanka and was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer which claimed his life.

Udabage was a well-known figure in the industry and worked at IDG Communications until five years ago when he retired from the company.

IDG Communications editorial director for Australian PC World, Gamepro and GoodGearGuide Amanda Conroy worked with Udabage and remembered "The Chief", as he was known, fondly.

She said: "Mike brought many people together, from all walks of life, and he brought out the best in those who knew and loved him. His love of good food, great company and a cigar and cognac at the end of the night is legendary.

"Mike as a mentor, friend and personal hero taught me many things - the most important one was to embrace life, friends and family - the moment is now.

"We are all saddened by this loss and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him."

Former Publishers Australia chairman John Blondin sat on the Publishers Australia board at the same time as Udabage and remembered in particular his excellent marketing knowledge.

"Mike sat on the Board when I was Chairman in the late 90's and was always creative in the manner in which he contributed ideas, in particular his marketing knowledge. In fact many of his ideas regarding publishing were highly successful especially in the IT publishing domain in which he spent much of his publishing time," said Blondin.

"Of particular relevance was Mike's commitment to his land of birth, Sri Lanka. I was fortunate to have Mike's direction when I travelled to Sri Lanka a few weeks after the Tsunami. Mike set me up with meetings with some of the most influential business people in Columbo who were important in giving me advice on a project whereby a Foundation I chaired acquired land and re-established a village building brick and tile houses with money raised in Australia and New Zealand. Publishers Australia contributed to this cause. Mike will be missed.
