The online advertising market has reported year-on-year growth of 17 per cent in the first quarter reaching $601 million. The data, compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for IAB Australia, shows search and directories growing 23 per cent, classifieds increasing 19 per cent, and general display growing 3 per cent. Search and directories now accounts for 54.2 per cent of overall advertising expenditure, accounting for $326 million in quarter one, with classifieds taking 24.2 per cent of the pie and display taking 21.6 per cent.
The finance industry was the biggest spender in general display, while real estate was the leading category for classifieds. Video-based advertising also saw strong growth, recording revenue of $8.44 million, up from $5.7 million in quarter one of 2010.
IAB Australia chief executive Paul Fisher said: "Cyclically Q1 is always a cautious quarter from media agencies and their clients and down on Q4. We expect continued double digit growth in search and directories, classifieds and a return to double digit growth for general display in Q2 and it's encouraging to see the strong growth in the display expenditure in the real estate, retail and health, beauty and pharmaceuticals industry categories."
